Ayanthi Gunawardana is a Senior Data Analyst at 1-800-Flowers. She has 8 years of experience working at the intersection of data and transportation at the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) and the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). At the TLC, Ayanthi analyzed the extensive TLC trip and vehicle dataset to inform public policy. At the NYC DOT, she analyzed car crash data for research reports, to determine the Vision Zero geographies in NYC, and to inform safety project construction and prioritization. Frustrated with a lack of available ArcMap licenses and armed with existing knowledge of R, she started learning the various geospatial packages in R to find alternative methods of processing and visualizing geospatial data. She has a Masters Degree in City Planning from Rutgers University and a Bachelors Degree in Sociology from Emory University.
