We are sad to hear of the recent passing of former member Daniel Patrick McHugh. His obituary is below.
Daniel Patrick McHugh, 77, of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, New York, passed peacefully on December 17, 2024, in Ooltewah, Tennessee. A wake will be held on January 3, 2025, from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm at McLaughlin & Sons Funeral Home, 9620 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn, New York. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church at 4th Avenue & 82nd Street, Brooklyn, New York, on January 4, 2025, at 9:45 am, with a burial to follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, Staten Island.
Born on February 27, 1947, Daniel was the son of Raymond and Mary McHugh. He graduated from Our Lady of Perpetual Help, from Xaverian High School, and from Brooklyn Polytechnic NYU School of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering. He received a Master of Science in Transportation Management from Brooklyn Polytechnic NYU. He was a proud member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity and of Mensa International.
Daniel fulfilled his dream of contributing to the 1969 moon landing when he was employed by the Grumman Aircraft Corporation. He then worked as a teacher for the New York City Department (formerly Board) of Education. He later joined the New York Metropolitan Transit Authority, with which he proudly worked on the post-9/11 infrastructure mapping project.
Daniel was an avid reader and swimmer. He was a member of the Sheepshead Bay Yacht Club. He was a member of the Space Commerce Roundtable; of URISA, a geographic information systems (GIS) group; and of GISMO and NYCARC. He often presented speeches about space exploration, including for fans of Star Trek.
Daniel is survived by his wife, Catherine Ann (Scanlon) McHugh, of 52 years. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Walter Scanlon, and his sisters-in-law, Alice (Dennis) Scanlon and Teresa (Thomas) Scanlon, as well as by his many cousins, nieces and nephews. His wit and wisdom will be greatly missed.
